One of the most notable features of buses in Northern Ireland during the last 25 years has been the large fleet of Bristol RELLs operated by Ulsterbus and Citybus. 20 Leyland engined Potter bodied buses were initially purchased by Ulsterbus for use in Londonderry, followed by no less than 600 Gardner engined versions, all with Alexander (Belfast) bodies. Additionally over 100 secondhand REs were acquired from mainland operators, all with ECW bodies.

Many of these were maliciously destroyed during the 'Troubles', but quite a number survived beyond the year 2000 with the final 2 Ulsterbus examples (2376 UOI 2376 / 2444 WOI 2444) lasting until the end of June 2004 and the last 10 Citybus vehicles being withdrawn on 31st March 2005.
